Born in the Year of the Elephant

Muhammad ﷺ was born in the city of Makkah, a long time ago. The year he was born is remembered as the Year of the Elephant. In that year, an army with a huge elephant tried to knock down the Ka'bah, the special house of worship. But Allah protected the Ka'bah and stopped the army. People remembered that amazing year for a long, long time — and it was the year the special baby was born.

A respected family of Quraysh

Muhammad ﷺ was born into a well-known and respected tribe called the Quraysh. The Quraysh were the people who looked after the Ka'bah in Makkah, and everyone knew them and honoured them. So Muhammad ﷺ came from a good and respected family.

His mother and father

His father was named Abdullah, and his mother was named Aminah. Sadly, Abdullah became ill and passed away before the baby was even born. So Muhammad ﷺ never met his father. That was a hard thing — but Allah never left him alone. Allah cared for this little boy and made sure he was loved.

A loving grandfather

When Muhammad ﷺ was born, his grandfather was so happy. His grandfather was named Abdul-Muttalib, and he was a leader among his people. Abdul-Muttalib loved the baby dearly and cared for him, and he chose his beautiful name, Muhammad, which means “the one who is praised”. Even without a father, this baby had a family who loved him and an Allah who watched over him. A special child had come into the world, and Allah had a very special future waiting for him.
