An honest trader

When Muhammad ﷺ became a young man, he worked as a trader. A trader buys and sells things, like cloth, food and other goods, and travels to sell them in faraway towns. Muhammad ﷺ was very good at this work, but the best thing about him was that he was always honest. He never cheated anyone and never told a lie. Because of this, the people of Makkah trusted him and called him Al-Ameen, which means “the trustworthy one”. Everyone knew that if Muhammad ﷺ said something, it was true.

Khadijah notices his honesty

In Makkah there lived a noble and wise woman named Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her). She was known for being kind, clever and respected, and she had her own trading business. Khadijah would hire honest people to take her goods to other lands to sell. When she heard how truthful and trustworthy Muhammad ﷺ was, she asked him to take her goods on a trading journey to Sham (the land we now call Syria). Muhammad ﷺ agreed, and Khadijah sent her helper, a man named Maysarah, to travel along with him.

A good and honest journey

On the journey, Muhammad ﷺ traded so well and so honestly that Khadijah's goods sold better than ever before. Maysarah watched him closely the whole time. When they came home, Maysarah told Khadijah all about how kind, gentle and honest Muhammad ﷺ had been. Khadijah was amazed. She could see that this was no ordinary man — he had a beautiful character, full of goodness and truth.

A loving, respectful home

Khadijah felt in her heart that Muhammad ﷺ would make a wonderful husband, so she gently offered to marry him, and he agreed. They were married, and Allah blessed them with a happy home full of love and respect. They cared for one another, spoke kindly, and shared everything together. Khadijah loved Muhammad ﷺ dearly and always supported him and stood by his side. Later, when hard times came, she would be his greatest helper and comfort. Their gentle, loving home shows us how beautiful a marriage can be when it is built on honesty, kindness and trust.
