Lesson: Patience Through Hard Times

Some proud leaders were unkind

When the Prophet ﷺ began sharing the message of Islam, many people listened and their hearts filled with love for Allah. But a few proud leaders of Makkah did not like the message. They were used to doing things their own way, and they did not want to change. So they were unkind to the Prophet ﷺ and to the early Muslims, and they tried to make them stop. It was a hard and worrying time. But the Prophet ﷺ never answered unkindness with unkindness. He stayed gentle and strong.

Staying patient — sabr

When times were hard, the Prophet ﷺ and the early Muslims did not give up. They stayed patient and kept trusting Allah. This kind of patience has a special name in Islam: sabr. Allah teaches us to be patient. He says: seek help through patience and prayer — Allah is with those who are patient. So the Muslims kept praying, kept helping each other, and kept believing that Allah would help them. The Prophet ﷺ also taught that patience is one of the best gifts Allah gives to a person. Being patient does not mean we never feel sad — it means we stay strong and gentle, and we keep trusting Allah.

The Year of Sadness

In one hard year, the Prophet ﷺ felt very sad, because he lost two people he loved very much. First, his beloved wife Khadijah passed away. She had always believed in him, comforted him, and stood by his side. Then his caring uncle Abu Talib, who had looked after him and protected him, passed away too. Losing both of them so close together made the Prophet ﷺ very sad. This time is remembered as the Year of Sadness. Even a prophet feels sadness when he loses people he loves — and that is alright. Allah understands our hearts.

Allah never left him

Through all of this, Allah never left the Prophet ﷺ alone. Allah comforted his heart and reminded him that He was always near. Allah told him: your Lord has not left you, and He is not displeased with you. And Allah gave everyone a beautiful promise for every hard time: with hardship comes ease. Yes — with hardship comes ease. This means that after every difficult time, Allah brings something good. So the Prophet ﷺ stayed patient and brave, and he kept trusting Allah. And soon, Allah would open a wonderful new door for him — but that is a story for next time.
